HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. - Music Maker is excited to say that Robert Lee Coleman's new album One More Mile will be released on May 29th of this year. This album is filled with the driving blues that Coleman has brought to the scene ever since he started over fifty years ago. This is his second album in partnership with Music Maker.
"Robert Lee Coleman is among the guitarists that invented funk. But in this album you hear him playing stinging rock blues, showing his musical versatility," Says Tim Duffy, Music Maker's founder.
Coleman was born May 15, 1945 in Macon, GA. He grew up in a time when the central Georgia area was a hotbed of Blues, R&B, and early Rock 'n Roll, and his album One More Mile is the culmination of a lifetime of blues. In 1964, Coleman was picked by R&B legend Percy Sledge to play guitar in his touring band; he was able to travel all over the Americas and even over to Africa.
In April of 1970 James Brown came to Macon looking for players to be in his backing band; the newly formed J.B.s. His playing from this time is documented on three of Brown's albums: "Hot Pants," "Revolution of the Mind," recorded live at the Apollo Theater in NYC; and the song "Make it Funky" from the "Soul Classics" LP.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Coleman played in Macon, and continued to tour. Then in 2011, Coleman was invited to play at the Paul Reed Smith experience, where Paul Reed Smith gifted him a guitar.
Coleman's true calling is driving blues and One More Mile is drenched with it. Coleman will be performing songs from his album July 27th at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, N.C. for the "Train to Train" music series.
