STEP BACK BABY - KING BISCUIT BOY

Richard Alfred Newell (March 9, 1944 – January 5, 2003), better known by his stage name King Biscuit Boy, was a Canadian blues musician. He was the first Canadian blues artist to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.. King Biscuit Boy played with artists such as Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, and Janis Joplin. Newell was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and played guitar and sang, but was most noted for his harmonica playing. His stage name was taken from the King Biscuit Flour Hour, an early American blues broadcast. He was given the name by Ronald "Ronnie" Hawkins, a pioneering rock and roll musician, while he was part of Hawkins' back-up band. Newell reportedly started his career by stealing his first harmonica (Marine Band, key of B) from a joke shop near his home on Hamilton Mountain, Hamilton, Ontario. Newell played with The Barons (later renamed Son Richard and the Chessmen) from 1961 to 1965, followed by a stint with The Midknights and in the summer of 1969 helped to form And Many Others, which was Ronnie Hawkins' backing band at that time. After one LP and several US appearances, Hawkins fired the entire band in early 1970, upon which the members, including Newell, formed themselves into their own band, which they named Crowbar. Newell recorded an album with Crowbar, then embarked on a solo career, although he played with Crowbar off and on throughout his career. After leaving Crowbar, he signed a major American deal with Paramount/Epic. Seven solo albums followed, along with two Juno nominations (the Juno Awards are the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. Grammy Awards). Newell released his last album in early 2003 at Race Records, an independent record label in Hamilton, Ontario. It was a collaboration with saxophonist Sonny Del-Rio (a former Crowbar bandmate and long-standing friend) entitled Two Hound Blues. The album was a combination of six lost tracks from the 1981 King Biscuit Boy album, Biscuits 'n' Gravy, and the 1991 Sonny Del-Rio effort, 40 Years of Rock & Roll and All I Got's the Blues, which was recorded in 2002. Blake 'Kelly Jay' Fordham (a former Crowbar bandmate and friend) recalled that Newell had a soft spot in his heart for 1950s doo-wop music. "We'd do a medley, four chords in F, and see how many songs we could fit into it; stuff by Johnnie & Joe - ""Over the Mountain, Across the Sea," and "You Belong to Me", or "Talk to Me", by Little Willie John. Each week we'd try to best ourselves, see who could come up with more. He would always find the most obscure stuff." Newell preferred Hohner Special 20 (diatonic) harmonicas, and was using a Danelectro amplifier late in his career. He rarely played a chromatic, either on stage or in the studio. Newell fought repeated battles with alcohol abuse throughout his life. Poor health due to alcoholism stunted his career through the 1990s. The bright spot in this time period was his release of the album Urban Blues Re: Newell in 1995. Newell succumbed to the disease at his home in Hamilton, Ontario, in 2003, just two months short of his fifty-ninth birthday.

Get Together - David Rotundo Band

Toronto blues harpist David Rotundo heard James Cotton perform at the El Mocambo in 1991. “He blew one note on the harmonica that hypnotized me...” The next day, Rotundo went out and bought a harmonica. “…and I’ve been playing the blues ever since.” Obsession with the blues led Rotundo on a diesel-fuelled roots tour of blues epicentres of the United States including - New Orleans, Clarksdale, Austin, Memphis and Chicago with little more than his wits and a bag full of harmonicas. "I wanted to hear and experience the real thing.” He returned to Canada with a visceral perception of the blues and a deep knowledge of blues history. After making the stories his own, he earned the right to tell them. Rotundo has developed his own language of the blues, honing the technique that gives the voice power and authenticity. In 1997, Rotundo led a band called The Blue Canadians (with Peter Schmidt, Shane Scott, Julian Fauth and Doc MacLean) who played the Toronto circuit. In 2000, he was asked to join the legendary Jack de Keyzer Band, while continuing to tour internationally with The Blue Canadians. He was thrilled by the opportunity to play with “one of the best Canadian guitarists”. Aside from de Keyzer, Rotundo has performed with Lee Oskar (from the legendary band War), Ronnie Hawkins, ex- Muddy Waters drummer Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Madagascar Slim, Mel Brown, Jeff Healey, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Finis Tasby, James Cotton, Magic Slim and The Tear Drops, Elvis Costello, Shakura S’Aida, members of Downchild, among many others. Rotundo’s 2001 debut album “Blowin’ for Broke” featured twelve original songs written by David and produced by bassist and engineer Shane Scott of Stone Pillar Productions. The album was nominated "Blues Album of 2001" by the Canadian Independent Artist Association and was winner of the MapleBlues Award "Best New Artist of The Year 2002". In 2003, David returned to Stone Pillar Studios with his newly formed international "David Rotundo Band", resulting in the highly popular, critically acclaimed "Blues Ignited" album featuring international guitarist Enrico Crivellaro. Rotundo, as well as writing the material for this album, also co-produced it with bassist/engineer Scott. After much fan demand, in late 2007, David recorded and released his live album - "Live at Roc 'N Doc's" which captured the true essence of the band’s high energy live performance. In 2008 it was considered in the top twenty blues albums released that year by various community radio stations with blues format shows. As a songwriter who easily pulls inspiration from the world around him that fuels his continual writing, Rotundo choose twelve new original songs that graced his fourth album “No Looking Back”, which again featured Enrico Crivellaro on guitar as well as Jeff Healey’s keyboardist Dave Murphy on organ. Released in March of 2009 to overwhelming response from fans both new and old, as well as industry - bright prospects continue to lie on the path ahead, which goes to prove, that for The David Rotundo Band, there really is no looking back… When you see David Rotundo live, you’ll know instantly that he lives for what he does.

Official Release Date March 26, 2013
Available for purchase on iTunes and at www.chrisantonik.com

In 2010, Canadian blues guitarist, singer and songwriter Chris Antonik arrived onto the national and international blues scene with his self-titled debut recording, which received widespread critical acclaim, placed in the Roots Music Report Top 100 charts for over a year, and garnered Antonik a nomination for Best New Artist of the Year at Canada’s national Maple Blues Awards.  After extensive touring and major blues festival appearances in Canada in 2011 and 2012, Chris now returns with his highly anticipated follow-up Better For You, scheduled for release on March 26, 2013.

Better For You
is a highly personal and reflective album for Antonik, dealing with rebuilding relationships, learning to put others first, and developing a positive moral code in a world full of blues.

With Antonik on the majority of lead vocals, guest vocalists include: two-time Grammy award-winner Mike Mattison (The Derek Trucks Band, The Tedeschi-Trucks Band), 2013 American Blues Music award-nominee Shakura S’Aida, and the incredibly soulful Josh Williams (The Fat Cats), who also features on keyboards throughout the album.  The electrifying and eternally funky Chris Chiarelli (drums) and Andrew Taylor (bass) once again hold down the rhythm section.  Other guest artists include: blues Juno award-winners Steve Marriner (MonkeyJunk) and Julian Fauth, as well as Canadian music veterans Suzie Vinnick, and Richard Underhill, who arranged all the horns on the album.

Co-produced by Antonik and Ted Onyszczak, the album was recorded by Grammy award-winning engineer Jeremy Darby (U2, Mick Jagger, Colin Linden) at Toronto’s Canterbury Studios, and includes 10 original songs written and co-written by Antonik, and one cover song. Ben Fisher, Paul Olsen (Scrapomatic) and Heather Hill contributed to the co-writes.

"The energy on Antonik’s sophomore release is...purely joyful...Antonik wields his guitar as someone with the authority to do so" - Blues Rock Review

"Antonik not only equals his dynamite debut release, but improves upon it in many ways." - BluesBytes.net

"Following Canadian acts I enjoy such as Colin James, David Gogo, JW Jones and Downchild, here comes a new name to add to the list - Chris Antonik."

Steve STRONGMAN wins Guitarist Of The Year  2nd year in a row at the Maple Blues Awards !

New acoustic CD to be released in April 2012!

Steve Strongman’s highly anticipated Acoustic CD “A Natural Fact” due for release, May 5 at the Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place.  Produced by Rob Szabo, the CD features solo pieces, as well as acoustic band tracks featuring Maple Blues Award winner Alec Fraser on bass, Dave King on drums, and Jesse O’Brien on piano.
Multiple Maple blues award winner and Juno nominee Suzie Vinnick makes an appearance on a duet with Strongman also.

2011 was an incredible year for Strongman. He has won a Maple Blues Award for Guitarist of the Year, a highly prestigious National honor, and most recently -
on the heels of highly successful summer tours of France and Switzerland - Strongman has just signed a European record deal with German based label Peppercake Records.

Steve Strongman's astounding guitar playing and expressive songwriting combined with his entertaining showmanship, have firmly established him as one of Canada’s best new Blues artists. The 2009 recipient of the prestigious Mel Brown Blues award, 2008 Maple Blues awards nominee for “Guitarist of the year”, 2007 Maple Blues Awards “Best New Artist” nominee, received standing ovations opening for the legendary Buddy Guy on his Canadian tour dates.

Steve Strongman Blues In Colour Self  Even after a well-received debut CD, Honey, the hard work continues. With a particularly effective showcase at the Blues Summit behind him, Steve Strongman keeps the ball rolling with a sparkling new CD. With release parties in home base Hamilton and here next month, the momentum should keep growing. He certainly has the songs and the performances here to make that happen. It’s basically a trio session, with multiple-award winning Alec Fraser on bass and producer Dave King on drums. Strongman overdubs some fine harp, especially on the rocking opener, “Mean To Me’. The only cover is up next, a solid take on Freddie King’s “Woman Across The River”, with the trio handling the changes superbly. “That’s What She Does” would have hit single written all over it if hit radio played these things.  With a catchy melody delivered in his distinctive, plaintive voice, it’ll be in your head for days. The jaunty “Can’t Back Down” switches gears to acoustic with Strongman on slide and King on brushes. Another winner. “Take My Arms” is a long, slow blues and it doesn’t disappoint, with perfect guitar accompaniments to the vocal and a stunning solo. Electric slide dominates “Can’t Stop But I’m Tryin’”, a song about vices (with Paul Intson on bass). “Heart” is a lovely acoustic ballad. “Lie To You” is another rocker with electric slide with a catchy chorus. “Plain Hard Truth”, with its unison vocal and guitar lines, is another slow blues that except for the chorus is so downhome it would not sound out of place on an R.L. Burnside album. A very good lyric too. The disc concludes with Strongman on his National saying, passionately, “Just Sorry”.

Available shows: Steve Strongman (solo acoustic), The Steve Strongman Band, Guitar Explosion with Paul Deslauriers and as a special guest with house band.

Better For You - Chris Antonik - New Release Review

I just received the new release (released formally on March 26, 2013), Better For You, by Chris Antonik and it's quite interesting. The release opens with Long Way To Go, a funky rock track with some really cool guitar by Antonick and harp work by Steve Marriner. Turn To Shine has the warm feeling of a Delaney and Bonnie track and it really feels like you're taking a bite of the old ATCO/Muscle Shoals/Capricorn stuff. Josh Williams' vocals are great and his guitar playing has the over driven sound of Duane and the rhythmic pacing of Dickey. Very cool! Come From A Good Place is a softer edged song with a lot of airplay potential. Like the song before, sweet horns back the track and in this case, lead vocals are handled by Shakura S'Aida who is obviously solid and Antonik grinds in some really hot guitar riffs. Broken Man features Mike Mattison singing a soulful ballad over a quiet background and light jazz rhythm. Up next is Walter Horton's Have A Good Time, a simple understated blues track and Josh Williams steps up on harmonica and vocal to compliment Antonik on guitar. Shake Me Down is a very cool track with a strong back beat and featuring Williams on organ. This is a warm backing for Antonik to not only sing but to lay out some funky wah wah guitar riffs. This track has a bit of jazz under the wool and that adds to the general texture of the track giving Antonik a bit of room to flex his fingers. Better For You is a bluesy ballad with an easy soul feel. I really like this track. It lays nicely in the groove and Antonik plays smoothly through the track drawing out some real nice blues riffs. Nothing I Can Do is another track with a bit of funk in the stew featuring Williams on keys and vocals and a bit of horns. Antonik takes a nice extended guitar solo on this track. Tell Me What You Need is a easy going radio style ballad. A lonely electric guitar playing in the field of openness behind Antonik's voice, not unlike an effect created by Dire Straits (different riffs of course) is really nice. Julian Fauth joins Antonik on piano for I'll Help You Through, a blues ballad (along the lines of New York State Of Mind). This is a nice smooth ballad with an equally smooth guitar solo to compliment Antonik's vocals on this track.   If you support live Blues acts, up and coming Blues talents and want to learn more about Blues news and Fathers of the Blues, ”LIKE” ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! This is not from the new release but I was unable to find something that is. This is a good example of Chris' work.

StarBright Productions artist: Texarillo - Black Satin Blues - New Release Review

I just received a copy of the first full length, all original release, Black Satin Blues, from Texarillo. Opening with I'd Rather Get Shot Down, singer, songwriter, guitar player Dwane Rechil leads a posse of 3 including Ricardo Bacardi (bass and vocals) and Ken Loudmann (drums and percussion) on an rockin blues a la Elmore James. Rechil shows his experience on the rock road with hot guitar riffs and modern vocal style. Next up is Elevator Operator, a soul/funk styled track with southern rock guitar riffs driving the trio into Macon country. 24-7 Blues has a laid back feel with a cool back beat and blues rock styling. This could easily be a radio track. Has a good hook and melody giving Rechil a good footing for some of his tastiest riffs on the release. Long Way (From Loving You), is a blues based ballad with rich guitar leads and vocals along the lines of Gary Moore or Joe Bonamassa. This track, conjuring some really cool tone and fluent riffs will likely have strong appeal to contemporary blues fans. The Things I Would Do To You is a light jazzy number with a rock a billy styling. Flood Water Rising is a Texas style blues rock track based loosely on Rollin and Tumblin. This is a cool track which seems to have a bit of British influence and so real nice slide work. The Devil Is Knockin' had a driving beat like you would think would come from Golden Earring with Loudmann keeping that blues influenced rock sound solid. Rechil plays outside of the regular blues box with some distorted guitar riffs and feedback and Bacardi drives the bottom with solid bass playing. Fire Starter has a bit of the Texas sound in the riffs but more like Chris Duarte than SRV. This track gives Rechil a chance to really show his rock chops with flaming hot guitar runs and original riffs calling to mind Jimi and Frank Marino. Stone Cold Heart Breaker opens with slide work blending Page with more contemporary hard rockers and country rock slide work. This is a real interesting track with a number of different characteristics and heavy bass reinforcing the heavy metal sound juxtaposed against the southern rock guitar work. Let You Down Easy takes a break in the barrage with another radio friendly track. This track is really well constructed and has a slick WW Washington/JG Watson style funky blues styling. it should be well received with it's clever musical hook. This track also has a contained guitar solo which is slick enough to get the guitar guys listening but not so hot as to back off the general listener. Wanna Go Down To Cali is standard acoustic 8 bar number with nicely articulated blues riffs. Rio Grande at High Noon has that TexMex flavor like a sound track from a spaghetti western. It is a cool intro to Hill Billy Idol, a fast paced blues - rock a billy riff along the lines of Hot Rod Lincoln. This is a really hot track bringing up flavors of Jeff's Boogie and showing a number of country riffs. My favorite track on the release! This is a cool release and one that you should check out.

Blues Guitarist Tim Bastmeyer Teams With Seasoned Bassist Jerome Tucker for New CD
Set for release in Spring/Summer 2013, the new CD will feature the duo of Tim Bastmeyer on guitar and vocals and Jerome Tucker on bass and vocals.

To celebrate the impending release and yet to be announced tour dates, Bastmeyer and Tucker are offering two songs for free download from their ReverbNation page.

The First track, To The Moon features funky bass and vocals from Tucker and slick fretwork from Bastmeyer. The second track, Devil In Me features Bastmeyer's unmistakable vocals and guitar with tucker on bass.

Tim Bastmeyer is a Canadian blues singer/songwriter who started his musical career in 1986 and over the years has played and recorded with a number of different recording artists. He has performed throughout North America, as well as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland and England.  His most recent self-titled recording was released in late 2011 and was produced and engineered by Bastmeyer. resulting in significant airplay and reviews, reaching #34 on The Roots Report. Featuring Juno award winning blues artist Julian Fauth on piano, James Thomson on bass and Corey Richardson on drums, this release is much different than Bastmeyer’s 2010 recording,  a solo acoustic blues recording titled Graveyard. There are 11 tracks on the CD, featuring 10 originals and a cover of the blues classic ‘I’m Going Down’. It is a mix of hard blues with a rock edge and blues ballads.

When not out playing shows Bastmeyer can be found in Uxbridge, Ontario where he and his wife own and operate a music school and recording studio.

Tucker started playing the electric bass at age 10 and by the age of 16 he was performing in clubs in the Philly area. During his time in the US Navy from 1983 to 1993 he had the opportunity to perform with Aaron and Ivan Neville throughout Alabama, New Orleans and the Southern USA. Tucker moved to Chicago in 1996 where he started hanging out at Buddy Guy’s Legends and had the opportunity to share the stage with artists such as Chico Banks, Lurrie Bell, John Primer, Lonnie Brooks, Son Seals, Koko Taylor, Larry McCray, Buddy Guy and more.
Prior to relocating to Canada in 2001, Tucker toured extensively throughout USA and Europe when he joined the Larry McCray Band. In Canada, Tucker continues to perform regularly in clubs throughout the Toronto area including performances at the Toronto Jazz Festival.  In 2010, Tucker won the Durham Region Music Society award for vocalist of the Year. He currently lives in Toronto and is preparing to record an album of his original songs.

Jeff Healey to release "As Years Go Passing By" Live CD/DVD

On Friday 22nd February, inakustik will release a compilation of three rare and previously unreleased German concerts recorded and filmed in 1989, 1995 and 2000, from the Canadian blues rock guitarist, Jeff Healey.
Entitled "Jeff Healey - As The Years Go Passing By: Live in Germany 1989 - 1995 - 2000", the concerts will be released as a 3 CD-set, and as a Deluxe Edition 3CD + 2DVD. The latter includes an extensive booklet featuring contributions from the participating musicians, plus rare photos.
The three concerts include "Ohne Filer Extra" (May 10, 1989), "Extraspät in Concert" (April 2, 1995), and "Ohne Filter Extra" (October 31, 2000).
"With the fifth anniversary of Jeff's passing coming up on 2nd March 2013, we were looking for a special way to commemorate and help celebrate Jeff’s life and legacy,"says Jeff’s widow, Cristie Healey.
"In preparing for this release, it was important to include the participation of as many of the performers involved as possible. Jeff’s friends and colleagues have enthusiastically shared their memories of the concerts which help to make this rare live compilation extra special.”
"The Jeff Healey Estate is very proud to endorse this release. It's the first collection of archive material to be officially released with the approval of the Healey Family since Jeff left us all too soon. We are privileged to continue the legacy of his immense efforts, incredible talent and sheer love of music, for everyone to enjoy.”
Jeff’s life wasn’t just about music but rather, music was part of what brought life to Jeff. It was part of who he was. For those who knew him, this fact was always quite apparent, even up to his last live performance, only a month before he passed away. The live recordings were created with the participation of those who knew Jeff best, sharing his talent with his fans, friends, and fellow musicians for years to come.

The three concerts give fans an insightful look into the evolution of Jeff Healey... a document of an outstanding guitarist in three distinct phases of his career. The concerts are presented as they were performed, live without the aid of studio intervention. Spanning eleven and a half years, they cover different periods in the history of the Jeff Healey Band, and yet, they are all linked by a common thread, Germany.
Germany always held a special place for the Jeff Healey Band. Consistently one of their strongest markets, German audiences were always fantastic and appreciative, giving Jeff and his band extra fire.
"Germany is a spectacular country,"recalls Jeff’s first bass guitarist, Joe Rockman. "In colourful detail, I would describe for Jeff the lush fields, gently rolling hills, picturesque vistas and majestic mountains. For him the best part was the warm enthusiastic response we encountered throughout the country. He loved sampling the old world brew and shuffling through the abundant second hand record shops.”
"The superb camera crews for each show display Jeff's technique with unique close-ups, putting the viewer right on stage,"continues Rockman. "I’d coach Jeff on how the cameras were placed, and he was aware of how to play to them, but also aware not to let them influence how he performed to the live studio audience. There's one cool shot I've never seen before, taken at an angle from Jeff's feet shooting up towards the guitar. During concerts around this period most people in the audience couldn't clearly see his revolutionary style of guitar playing, so all three shows are a rare treat…”
1989: The "Ohne Filter Extra"Concert
Healey is in great spirits, and it is clearly evident and from the opener, I’m Tore Down. The energy coming off the stage is intense. The frenzy of the crowd is given a bigger boost by a wild group of Canadians in the audience showing their support. The playful exuberance Jeff puts out in the solo for My Little Girl is reflective of the feel of the entire show.
Joe Rockman: "The 1989 Ohne Filter Extra show has the original trio in exhilarating form, hamming it up on stage and pushing the sound of the three-piece to the extreme. It was our dream to reach the world, and being in Germany was new and exciting. We were feeling indestructible, with a surge of creativity including film, video, CD, and playing to huge festival crowds. We were intent at pushing and proving ourselves for every show."
"There is fire in Jeff's playing, an urgency sometimes startling, almost as if the notes were saying "Here! Listen here!" His technique was amazing. It was as if some kind of demented Daddy Long Legs spider was dancing over the neck of his guitar."
"We used the keyboard in songs where we needed to fill out the middle when Jeff broke into a solo. In I Need To Be Loved, Angel Eyes and When the Night Comes Falling From the Sky you can hear how Jeff used the 12 string Jackson double-neck fora wider tone, also playing the twelve and six string necks off each other in solos for great effect.”
When The Night Comes Falling is one of the highlights of this show. With Joe’s great harmony vocals and Jeff’s double-neck Jackson guitar, they pull out all the showman chops. Jeff is sweat-drenched and leaps around the stage playing the guitar behind his head. The performance culminates in a fantastic show-stopping version of See The Light.
1995: Extraspät in Concert
By 1995, the live band had been through some changes. After their debut, See The Light, the band experienced success with their sophomore release Hell To Pay (featuring George Harrison and Mark Knopfler), followed by the 1992 follow up Feel This. During the tour for this release, the band had sought to augment its sound and take things in a different direction, adding back-up singers and a keyboard player. This version of the touring band would remain short-lived however and with the start of recording in 1994 a change was again heralded ...
Peeling back the layers for a ‘return to the basics’ the band recorded their next album, Cover To Cover mostly as a three-piece.
In a 1995 Guitar Player Magazine interview, Jeff elaborated,"We felt like we'd sort of gotten off track," Healey says. "I wanted to do something different and fun and reminiscent of the days when we made very little money. In the end we recorded 30 or 40 songs - or at least we half-attempted to record that many. If a song started breaking down and it took a lot of thought to figure out what to do with it, we just moved on, because we wanted these recordings to be as spontaneous as possible.”
In many ways reborn and revitalized in its newly stripped down form, the addition of guitarist Pat Rush (Johnny Winter, et. al) to the live line-up brought much to the proceedings. Pat’s experience and skill opened up Jeff to play more freely and not have to worry about carrying the song. In many ways, Pat was the perfect counterpoint for Jeff on stage and certainly, exactly what the band needed at this point in time.
Joe Rockman: "Pat Rush was a huge asset and began touring with us to support the Cover to Cover record. Jeff was becoming a bit burned out shouldering all the guitar duties. Pat had mastery of several types of guitars, pedals and effects and was able to summon up a landscape of orchestral arrangements to widen our sound. It amazed me to hear so many variations of a guitar sound especially with his outstanding slide. He had the sensitivity to lay back, create space, and at times add flourish, tastefully complimenting Jeff. The interplay between Jeff and Pat shines on every track.”
Pat Rush: "Jeff used to introduce me as the guy he stole all his licks from. He first came to see me at Grossmans Tavern (in Toronto) when he wasn't even old enough to be in bars. He liked my slide guitar playing and he liked the fact that I was also a good rhythm player so that when he took a solo the rhythm guitar helped to keep the groove. When he soloed I kept the groove going while he went into outer space on a solo and vice versa! He loved trading off solos back and forth in some songs.”
There are many highlights in the 1995 show; Pat’s stand out slide playing on Stop Breaking Down, the wonderful interaction between Pat and Jeff in Roadhouse Blues… you can feel how much fun they’re having on stage… Jeff’s playing on the Albert King classic, As The Years Go Passing By, is all passion and fire. His soulful voice creating perfect symmetry with the fat tone of his Les Paul.
Joe Rockman: "The second period (Cover To Cover) represented in this set is a wonderful example of the JHB captured in a controlled environment. The outstanding Extraspät In Concert production team gives it the full ambiance of a concert hall, and the guitar heavy mix broadens the entire sonic spectrum. This is one of our finest live recordings. Here we see footage of Jeff maturing as a musician and singer. He has gained control, range and expression in his vocals. He's more relaxed and confident, and his guitar playing is more dynamic and directional. He leads the guitar now, as opposed to earlier work where sometimes the guitar would lead him. From the start his tone leaps out of the Les Paul, now perched on a metal stand to allow a live audience to see more of his amazing technique.”
Pat Rush: "It was my second time touring Europe with Jeff and we performed a bunch of German dates. I remember how good the production was, the techs doing the TV shows were very together. When watching the videos I was impressed with the sound and video mix."
Jeff is often unrecognized for his skillfulness on acoustic guitar. His playing was as proficient and unique as on electric.
Joe Rockman: "Jeff's prowess on the acoustic guitar is featured on Me and My Crazy Self (a song I discovered on one of his CD "rejects" that he gave me) and Angel Eyes where we stage ourselves up front."
Me and My Crazy Self is indeed a great showcase for Jeff’s raw talent. Stripped of all artifice, Jeff’s expressive voice and brilliant acoustic playing are laid bare on the stage, providing an aural break from the relentlessness of the band. Pat Rush returning to add an intricate web of sound to a full band acoustic version of Angel Eyes provides the perfect segue back to full volume.
When the band returns fully amplified with Roadhouse Blues, the incredible back-and-forth between Pat and Jeff takes the song to new heights, priming the audience for what follows, an extraordinary fifteen and a half minute version of See The Light.
2000: Ohne Filter Extra
Performing in support of their first release in five years (2000’s wildly unappreciated Get Me Some), the band was dealing with its share of turmoil behind the scenes and sadly, this tour would mark the beginning of the end for the original line-up. It would be one the final concerts where the three core members, Joe Rockman, Tom Stephen and Jeff Healey would tour together.
For this tour, new blood was once again injected into the band, this time in the form of Philip Sayce, a brilliant young lead player in his own right, with a great voice to boot (just watch as he cuts loose on the Albert Collins tune, Put The Shoe On The Other Foot). Jeff's invitation for him to join up was extended with the intention of helping him with his own eventual/inevitable career.
Joe Rockman: "Our third era (the 2000 Ohne Filter show) features songs of our final studio recording where we experimented with a varied approach to our songwriting, combining elements of the core band's individual influences along with superb collaborators. This was the final show of our 2000 Euro tour and we were feeling the effects of our relentless schedule. Jeff was struggling with the last dregs of a cold, but that would not stop him. He had a strong professional work ethic, and could still outperform while feeling under the weather. Check out his call and answer guitar stings on How Blue Can You Get."
"Philip Sayce is an astounding guitar player, and we were excited for our opportunity to introduce him to the world. A perfect foil for Jeff, he could push the expression of blues to a lightning fast level, taking it to a dimension Jeff wouldn't normally go. I had a sense that Philip put his entire essence and soul into his playing, at times propelling off his feet and into the air. When close on stage, it was magnetic. I could feel presence and power emanate from him. In response Jeff would play even more dynamically, bringing things down to a whisper, then erupting into a cascade of sonic fury which Phil would then match, driving Jeff even further. At times you see a look of amused awe on Phil's face when Jeff pulled off something that didn't sound quite human.”
Philip Sayce: "By the time we arrived at Ohne Filter Extra (our last show of the tour, and Halloween!), there was an excitement in the air. Emmylou Harris shared the bill with Healey, which was apparently the last episode of this TV series to be filmed. The German audience was incredible that night, as they always are. There was a real edge to the performance that night, we came out swinging, and I remember of course, Jeff was ferocious, relentless, in complete control. Even on the last show of this tour, exhausted and fighting a nasty cold, Jeff blew away everyone, as he always did... he brought the thunder, and rendered everyone in that audience speechless.”
Joe Rockman: "As a rhythm section, we would strive to experiment and push beyond the borders of a traditional team. To back up Jeff, Philip employs a powerful insistent rhythm, while weaving colours and textures on the slower numbers. He instilled excitement in the JHB's performances throughout this tour. A great example of Philip's uncanny vocal range can be seen in the Albert Collins song, Put The Shoe On The Other Foot which was a showcase for him. There was a pivotal time during this performance. As I heard Jeff and Phil in a searing double lead, it hit me. As bassist and co-producer of the JHB, I was sharing the stage and studio with some of the greatest guitarists the world had ever seen."

Philip Sayce: "This was one of the last tours I did with Jeff, as I was preparing to start my own career full time. A move Jeff had orchestrated, intended and endorsed from the first time he asked me to join him and his band. To this day, I’ve never experienced anything like standing beside Jeff onstage, or even hanging on a tour bus listening to music together. He was one of my biggest heroes, and still is. I cherish every moment I had with him, and it helped to set me on my life's musical path. I feel his presence and influence every time I play. When he performed, it was like time stopped."

"Jeff's guitar tones and phrasing were instantly recognizable not just because of his unique style, but also his vast knowledge of music and music history. He had a sonic photographic memory and all his influences, especially his love of early jazz and Louis Armstrong would creep into his playing to create his own unique sound and voice."
"I don't think like a guitar player. Nor do I think that way when I'm playing the trumpet as a trumpet player or the piano as a piano player… I'm always thinking very musically, so when I approach the guitar, again, it's not as a guitar player. I'm playing the music and conveying emotion."- Jeff Healey (Vintage Guitar Magazine in 2002)
Jeff Healey – Official Biography
Canadian guitar music icon, Jeff Healey, was born in Toronto on March 25, 1966. Blind from early childhood due to a rare form of eye cancer, Jeff Healey’s guitar playing virtuosity and soulful voice saw him rise to prominence in the entertainment world in the late 1980’s and ‘90’s selling millions of albums worldwide.
Getting his first guitar at the age of three, he developed a unique style of playing, placing the guitar flat on his lap and playing it like a lap steel, putting his hands over the fret board, giving him the flexibility of fretting with all five fingers and the power of pulling notes with the strength of his whole hand.
With the Jeff Healey Band, he would record five studio albums and contribute to the soundtrack of the cult classic film, Patrick Swayze’s ‘Road House’ (a film in which Jeff and the band were also featured).  In addition to countless recording sessions as a guitarist, trumpet player, singer and producer, Jeff also recorded three albums of the traditional jazz that he loved so much.  Just prior to his untimely passing, Jeff put the finishing touches on his first rock/blues album in nine years, the award winning ‘Mess of Blues’.
Over the years, Jeff’s reputation as a player and a person led him to perform and record with such incredible luminaries as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Ian Gillan and many more.
For over two decades, Jeff went on to enjoy both a successful rock/blues career and a wonderful jazz career as well.  In 2001 he opened the first of two nightclubs that would bear his name in his home town of Toronto.  Grammy nominee and Juno award winner, he was a radio personality, a jazz historian and world famous record collector (owning a collection of 1920’s and ‘30’s jazz 78s that would include 30,000 records).
Jeff Healey passed away on March 2nd, 2008 from cancer.  He was 41 years old.
Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund is a research foundation dedicated to helping children with retinoblastoma, the form of eye cancer which took Jeff’s sight as an infant. This wonderful organization has affected real change through its research throughout the years and is near and very dear to the Healey family.
