What It Is

One of my best friends in college used to say that to me every time that he saw me in college. He was a 6'5" black guard on Pitt's football team who had never seen a white face before he moved to Washington DC from the country surrounding Meridian, Mississippi in around 1969. He was an anomaly. He was one of the friendliest people that you would ever meet and could take all the abuse that you could dish out. I met him at "training table" and he was easy top spot. He wasn't wearing polyester and looking like superfly. He was wearing a tee shirt and had more patches on his jeans than anyone I know. If you were around then you understand my point. The second time I met him I said, Hey , Big E and he said "What it is MF" he was singing Casey Jones as he walked down the hall. I asked him if he had a match and he replied "Your breath and a buffalo's fart MF". This was one cool dude. We became close friends and I can attribute him to turning me on to a lot of good music... the Elvin Bishop Group being one. So back to "What It Is". What it is is a damn great blues band. Hamilton Loomis that is. Another guy slipping under the radar and my pal Anthony again comes through with this guy. I was immediately taken by this guys style and the tightness of the band. It is by no means close to anything I have ever heard but his voice, relaxed R&B style and sax in the band puts me a lot in mind of Edgar Winters first album. I just can't get enough!

In any case...check him out. I hope you like it!!
