Key To The Highway - Andy Egert Blues Band feat.Bob Stroger

ANDY EGERT and his blues band is one of the most appearing live-bands of Switzerland and has got a high reputation during the last 20 years. Presenting blues at its best and in the tradition of their great heroes Freddie King, Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, Robert Johnson and many others. Andy Egert has taken a lot of time to work on his sixth CD and to pick the right songs – and he did! “I`m a Bluesman-Live” presents him again as outstanding guitar blues artist in its best way and he confirms his position as one of the leading blues artists in Europe. Mainly influenced by the best Chicago-Texas and British-Blues Tradition, Andy Egert (vocal, guitar, harmonica) works in the classical trio line-up and covers fascinating classics from Johnny Winter, Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Alvin Lee, Canned Heat, Otis Rush or Junior Parker but also presents some self penned songs. The band line-up gains additional attention by the help of such superb artists like drummer Tosho Yakkatokuo and the legendary bass player and singer Bob Stroger, who comes out of the heart of the Chicago scene and also Robert Lucas, singer, slideguitar and harmonica player from Canned Heat ! It Hurts Me Too - Dr. G. B. Burt

Dr. G.B. Burt (b.1/30/37) was born in Birmingham AL. During WWII his family moved to west coast where his father went to work in the shipyards. In 47 his family moved back to Alabama and then on to Florida often migrating to wherever his dad could find work. He comes from a musical family. His mother played the piano and sang gospel music. His father and uncles Arthur and Herbert Burt were all blues guitarists. G.B. took up the guitar and playing the blues when he was in his teens and has kept it up ever since. When he was 14 he began to box. In 54 he fought in the Golden Gloves tournament and later he trained with Alvin Blues Lewis who went on to fight Muhammad Ali. When he was 30 he married and settled down and found work with Ford Motors in Michigan. After nearly 10 years he went out on his own, bought a wrecker truck and became an independent mechanic, a job he continues to this day. Inspired by watching the feature film on Lead Belly he bought a 12 –string guitar that he has stuck with ever since. Dr G.B relates, “The blues is my life, to tell you the truth. It is what I have lived and what I have seen. It is real life. Love, rejected love. There is happy blues, sad blues, it is just the life. It is what I am about. I put them in my songs and music. I look at things whatever is going on and sing about it. I have been playing for a long time, I laid my guitars down for five years. I started looking at my five boys and something told me that I had to show them about this music. Now I got my boys trained and they are good. They are working getting their music together. My grandbaby’s now are into the music. We are all working for the music. I believe this music is important. When folks hear my music they know it is me. I sing how I feel. I do not sing about violence. I sing about love. I do everything I can do to sing about good things. It comes out alright. I am looking forward, to get my name in the record book, and do what I can do to help my sons and my family. I want the audiences to know who I am. I want to put my stamp on this music, get my name in the book, so people remember who I am.” Bo Diddley What Can A Man Do But Sing the Blues? Tequila - Arlen Roth & Danny Gatton

Here's a cool video of two great guitar players. Danny Gatton (September 4, 1945 – October 4, 1994) was an American guitarist who fused rockabilly, jazz, and country styles to create his own distinctive style of playing. A biography, Unfinished Business: The Life and Times of Danny Gatton by Ralph Heibutzki, was published in 2003. It has a voluminous discography. Gatton was ranked 63rd on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time in 2003. On May 26, 2010, Gibson.com ranked Gatton as the 27th best guitarist of all time.
Arlen Roth (born 1952) is an American guitarist. His first solo album won the Montreaux Critics' Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year in 1978.] He was Guitar Player magazine's top columnist from 1982 to 1992. He has performed with artists such as Bob Dylan, Danny Gatton, John Entwistle, John Prine, Rick Wakeman, Paul Simon (as well as Simon and Garfunkel), Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Levon Helm, Bill Kirchen, Duane Eddy, Steve Morse, Albert Lee and Phoebe Snow.[1] Roth is a Telecaster enthusiast, and has written the book Masters of the Telecaster, which details the techniques and licks of many famous Telecaster guitar players.[2] As a solo artist Roth performs frequently with his younger daughter, Lexie Roth, a recording artist, performer and songwriter in her own right. Roth is often referred to as "The Master of the Telecaster", and as the "King of All Guitar Teachers".[citation needed] He was greatly influenced by Clarence White of The Byrds' string bending style, but at the age of 14, he did not know White had invented a "B-string bender" for his Telecaster, so Roth developed a new style of doing this with fingers alone. He thus innovated many string-bending styles on the guitar, simulating a "pedal steel" guitar. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Walkin Blues - Leon Russell and Chris Simmons

i have a very wide, yet highly selective range of influences... starting with robert johnson, muddy waters, freddie king and bb king. i put mr. johnson at the top of acoustic blues and everyone else a distant second. muddy stands way out to me when it comes to the real blues electrified. the two kings are my faves when it comes to the blues solo guitar. i got into eric clapton with cream and blind faith and derek and the dominoes... and duane allman and the allman brothers pretty heavy and that really led me to the even older blues. i also got in to peter green pretty heavy for awhile. DEREK TRUCKS, Aubrey Ghent, PETER GREEN. PETER GREEN. PETER GREEN. before i played guitar i was really into prince. i thought he was super cool and i was right. van halen is what made me beg my mom for my first guitar. before i got into any of the old blues or allmans or clapton, i was a 100% AC/DC fanatic. i still am, just to a lesser percent, more like 95%. i think angus young's guitar is really what introduced the blues to me in the first place. led zeppelin, GOD! they're great! the who, i like their power. don't forget skynyrd. my favorite vocalist in the world is paul rodgers. FREE and bad company and everything else up to queen. i like some old country music.. merle, cash, hank, dolly, loretta... all that good old stuff. i'm a slight stones fan.. a huge beatles fan... paul and george are my favorites. "the Band" really gets me inspired. that whole thing is just surreal. i think 70's lite rock like ARS and firefall and nitty gritty is super cool. i think the bee gees are kinda cool and extremely good songwriters. speaking of songwriters... jim croce, james taylor. skip the 80's until you get to GnR. there we're a lot of okay rock bands, but GnR really stands the test of time for me. hey and the black crowes! stone temple pilots are super duper cool. velvet revolver rocks. ben folds kicks ass. my favorite band right now is the foo fighters. great playing, great songs, great show. i forgot a few, but lately i've definitely recognized a lot of influence from Leon Russell that i didn't before and some Jerry Lee Lewis. Reali Records Artist: J.P. Reali - The Road To Mississippi - New Release Review

I just received the newest release, The Road To Mississippi, by J.P. Reali. This is a primarily solo acoustic recording with Reali on vocal and resonator guitar, but with backup now and again by Mark Wenner (Nighthawks) on harp, Peter Ragusa on drums and John Prevetti bass. This is a solid resonator sonata with creative lyrics and vocals by Reali. Reali wrote (or co wrote) all 12 compositions. The release captures the feel of old Delta blues but with more contemporary vocals and attack. Bloozin' In NYC, a track strongly influenced by the likes of Elmore James is the hottest track on the release but numerous Piedmont style tracks will entertain you quite nicely. Eli's Pork Chop - LITTLE SONNY

Little Sonny (born Aaron Willis, October 6, 1932, Greensboro, Alabama) is an American electric blues harmonica player, singer and songwriter. His early mentor and inspiration was Sonny Boy Williamson II. Nevertheless, Little Sonny stated that his nickname originated with his mother. "[She] called me 'Sonny boy' from the time I can remember." He has released eight albums, including a trio on a subsidiary of Stax Records. His 1973 release, Hard Goin' Up, reached the Top 50 in the US Billboard R&B chart. He was born in 1932 and raised solely by his mother. His early interest lay in baseball, before he relocated to Detroit in 1953. At first he had no real interest in music until, as he explained, "But then I saw Sonny Boy Williamson II." Willis was "spellbound at the way he played. After the show I went home and practiced for hours. Every day after that I would practice until I got the sound I wanted." His daytime job was working in a used car lot. His first professional appearance was at the Good Times Bar in Detroit, playing in Washboard Willie's backing group. He put together his first band in March 1956. For the following fifteen years Little Sonny performed in numerous Detroit clubs, often boosting his earnings by photographing customers between his on-stage appearances. He ofttimes performed alongside John Lee Hooker, Eddie Kirkland and Baby Boy Warren. Another club stalwart Eddie "Guitar" Burns provided accompaniment to Little Sonny on his debut single, "I Gotta Find My Baby" (1958), which was released by Duke Records. It was co-written with Little Sonny's wife, Maggie. His follow-up release, "Love Shock" appeared on Excello label. He received $25 for the latter track, before setting up his own label (Speedway Records) and selling sufficient copies of his next effort, "The Mix Up", to write off his production costs. Home recording his own tracks, in 1966 he leased "The Creeper" and "Latin Soul" to Revilot Records. A later track, "Sonny’s Bag," became his first Top 20 hit in Detroit. By late 1969, Little Sonny finally recorded his debut album, the predominately instrumental, New King of Blues Harmonica, which he cut in less than six hours. It was released on Enterprise, a subsidiary of Stax Records. Despite their reputation for soul music productions, Little Sonny released three albums with them in the early 1970s. He also briefly appeared in their concert film, Wattstax. Black & Blue (1972) and 1973's Hard Goin' Up followed, with Little Sonny using an Old Standby 34B harmonica. A lean period ensued before the British label Sequel Records issued Sonny Side Up in 1995. His accompanists included keyboard player Rudy Robinson, and Little Sonny's guitarist son Aaron Willis, Jr., who had both played on Hard Goin' Up over twenty years previously. Little Sonny appeared at Black Hills State University on June 24, 2000. His photograph collection, housed in the basement of his Detroit home, includes shots of John Lee Hooker, Eddie "Guitar" Burns, Eddie Kirkland, Joe Hunter, Eddie Willis, Bobby Bland, Washboard Willie, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Little Sonny performed on October 4, 2008, at the Motor City Blues & Boogie Woogie Festival, in Detroit, with Eddie "Guitar" Burns, Otis Clay and Bobby Rush. He is not to be confused with Little Sonny Warner, Little Sonny Jones, or Little Sonny Parker. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer Breakout at BreakOut West

The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer Breakout at BreakOut West
Vancouver’s edgy blues duo The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer have ended the summer season on a high note with their participation in The BreakOut West Festival held in Regina last weekend with a nomination for Blues Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and several showcase performances.
Though the award went to another popular BC blues artist, David Gogo, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer's high-energy and original brand of blues caused quite a buzz amongst attendees at the festival.

“I’ve never seen a band command such energy from an audience so early in their career.  The energy coming from the stage was undeniable…it was brilliant”
-Liam Killeen, Coalition Music

"I got a very pleasant surprise when I caught The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer. I was blown away by their dynamic & crowd pleasing set. I'm certainly keeping my eyes on these guys & if I'm not mistaken, they are going places"
-Yvonne Matsell, Co-founder NXNE Music Festival

In addition to their raucous performances, industry panels, gaining new fans and general schmoozing at The BreakOut West Festival, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer also signed a deal with Canada's leading agency Paquin Entertainment. Paquin Entertainment's expertise as both a booking agency and talent buyer provides engagement opportunities to national and international acts across Canada, the U.S., and through its reciprocal arrangements, in European and Asian markets. This partnership, along with widespread media attention will be sure to raise the profile of BC's dynamic blues duo.

The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer are not known for sticking to conventionality. Their modern take on blues and roots music has been described as “‘blues that gets you in the crotch” and their dedication to preserving and promoting the blues has helped introduce the genre to younger fans all over the country.

Kanika Kress

Kanika Kress, a Chicago blues performer since 1986, was known for both her singing and guitar playing. A 1988 Tribune review of her performance at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn said: "There's a new blues artist on the scene who not only can wring out every last bit of emotion from a down-and-out tearjerker but also can play a very mean blues guitar. She may not have a typical blues name, nor with her Grace Jones haircut does she have a typical blues appearance, but make no mistake, Kanika Kress is ready to carve out her own niche in the Chicago blues world." Where`s a new blues artist on the scene who not only can wring out every last bit of emotion from a down-and-out tearjerker but also can play a very mean blues guitar. She may not have a typical blues name, nor with her Grace Jones-like haircut does she have a typical blues appearance, but make no mistake, Kanika Kress is ready to carve out her own niche in the Chicago blues world. It`s hard enough for female singers to gain respect in the largely male-dominated blues arena, so to be a highly regarded blues singer and guitarist is no small feat. Kress began playing guitar when she was 12 years old. She got her start, at 16, backing up soul singer Walter Jackson. Two years later, she formed an all-girl rock band, Girlathon International, where she opened for such performers as Bill Withers, the Staple Singers and Funkadelic-heady company for a South Shore High School teenager on the brink of adulthood. Also played with Roy Buchanan prior to her untimely death at 39 in 1993. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! In the many reviews she has received, Dana has been likened to many of the blues greats - Koko Taylor, Big Mama Thornton, Maggie Bell and Janis Joplin - with much emphasis placed on her powerful vocals and harmonica skills. .. Dave Dixon, whose guitar playing "has to be seen to be believed", is an official endorsee of Gibson guitars (USA), and Rotosound strings (UK). .. Jazz-Fusion All-Star Trio Scott Henderson Jeff Berlin Dennis Chambers To Release New CD 'HBC'

Asheville, NC – Much to the excitement of musicians and jazz aficiondos worldwide, the highly anticipated CD release by jazz-fusion legends Scott Henderson, Jeff Berlin and Dennis Chambers, will be released on Tone Center Records (a division of Shrapnel Records) on October 16, 2012. Considered one of the most phenomenal trios in the history of jazz-fusion, HBC's debut CD delivers a full dose of virtuosic performances guaranteed to thrill and inspire all who listen.

“The trio is all about interplay,” explains guitarist Scott Henderson. “Jeff and I have always had a very high level of communication when we play together, and putting Dennis in the mix notches it up even higher. He's an extremely musical drummer, but at the same time has the ability to bring the energy up to scary levels.” Bassist Jeff Berlin adds, “We pretty much have the same vision of how three strong players should sound together. We function well on many levels; we're friends and love to hang. We're also individually dedicated to high standards of playing.”

The music on the CD reflects the influences and spirit of HBC. Tracks include covers by Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham and originals penned by Henderson and Berlin individually. Says Jeff. “We all agreed to the repertoire but Scott picked most of the songs.” Scott explains, “I thought it would be cool if a guitar trio covered songs by keyboard players like Joe Zawinul and Herbie Hancock, though we did some Wayne Shorter tunes as well.”

Before recording their debut album, HBC hit the road first, refining their repertoire in front of thousands of elated fans. “We try to find new ways to play at every gig,” Jeff explains. “When we are gigging our motor is always set to high.” Scott adds, “Because the three of us have so much experience playing different styles of music, we're able to go from graceful straight-ahead jazz to heavy metal and just about everywhere in between, so it's an extremely versatile band, which makes it a lot of fun.”

Scott Henderson is considered one of the premier jazz-fusion guitarists performing on the planet today. Although Henderson claims to be more of a blues-rock player, with influences like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore, it was the influence of jazz that led him to the style of playing and composing he is now famous for. Henderson has recorded and toured with such notable artists as Chick Corea's Elektric Band, Jean-Luc Ponty, and a four year stint with Weather Report legend Joe Zawinul. He formed the band Tribal Tech in 1984 with bassist Gary Willis, and recorded ten critically acclaimed albums. In 1991 Scott Henderson was named by Guitar World as the #1 Jazz Guitarist, and in January 1992 he was named #1 Jazz Guitarist in Guitar Player's Annual Reader's Poll. Henderson has also released three well-received solo albums as well as two releases with Vital Tech Tones, a trio collaboration with bassist Victor Wooten and ex-Journey/Vital Information leader Steve Smith on drums. As is often the case with a musician of Scott's caliber, the demand is great that he share his knowledge with the current generation of guitarists. He is on the faculty at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, and has written columns for Guitar Player, Guitar World and Guitar School magazines.

Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass, considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world. A true master of the bass, Jeff Berlin has played with the likes of Bill Bruford, Alan Holdsworth, AWBH and George Benson. Jeff Berlin's resume reads like the who's who of the higher echelon of music artists. Jeff Berlin was even asked to join Van Halen, an invitation that he actually turned down. Not only is Jeff Berlin a innovator in the jazz field, but rock players are constantly siting him as their major influence. Carlos Santana called Jeff the “best bassist in the world”, while Rush’s Geddy Lee used the phrase “best bassist on the planet!” Jeff Berlin's innovative bass playing has influenced a generation of bass players world-wide. He was voted #1 Jazz Bassist by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. Jeff also pioneered a technique called 'two handed tapping', when he performed this style on the track "Motherlode" from his 1985 debut solo album called 'Champion'. The founder of The Players School of Music in Clearwater, Florida, Jeff has also been at the forefront of music education for almost 30 years. His columns in Guitar Player and Bass Player magazines were the most read columns due to their controversial content of music education. Jeff single-handedly has re-vamped music education by dismissing popular methods of learning such as using electronic tuners, metronomes, handgrips, tablature, or any study method that does not include musical content.

Dennis Chambers is a miracle in modern music; a formidable, ferocious and ultra-funky presence behind the drum kit in such celebrated ensembles as Parliament-Funkadelic, Steely Dan, Santana and the Brecker Brothers, as well as incendiary fusion outfits led by guitarists John Scofield, Steve Khan, Mike Stern and John McLaughlin. A remarkably versatile drummer who has shown limitless abilities to swing on a small kit in traditional jazz settings or flaunt his stylistic chops in rock-fusion super sessions, Dennis Chambers is one of the most recorded and sought after drummers in the world of Jazz-Fusion. In 2007, just before Led Zeppelin was scheduled to perform at the O2 Arena in London, John Bonham's son Jason was asked in an interview, if he was to give up the drum seat for the reunited Zeppelin, who would he recommend to fill the coveted drum throne. He replied, “I would probably want a jazz drummer with a strong swing feel. Dennis Chambers...I think he would 'get it', whereas other rock drummers wouldn't.”

And now, these three icons of jazz-fusion have come together to form a supergroup that has recorded a ground breaking debut CD! “I'm happy with it,” Scott says of the new CD, “and for me that's saying a lot because I'm very self critical. Being a big fan of the musicians we covered, I worked really hard to make the songs sound as huge and textural as they are on the original recordings, which meant doing a lot of layering.” Jeff concludes, “I coundn't be more pleased with the results.”

'HBC – Henderson, Berlin, Chambers' will be available on Amazon, iTunes, Shrapnel Records and local record stores on October 16, 2012.

You want more Bill Howl - N - Madd Perry!! - The Sky is Crying

Due to the overwhelming popularity of my earlier post of Bill Howl - N - Madd Perry, I am giving the people what they want! More More More!! "The Sky is Crying" by Scott Albert Johnson and Bill "Howl-N-Madd" Perry @ Hill Country Harmonica Foxfire Ranch, Waterford Mississippi (between Oxford and Holly Springs) Bill "Howl-N-Madd" Perry is one of the North Mississippi hill country's best-kept secrets--or at least he was, until he and saxophonist Alphonso Sanders took second place in the solo/duo category in this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Hailing from Abbeville, Mississippi, only a few miles down the road from Foxfire Ranch, he knows how to rock the juke with nothing more than his guitar, his foot, and his voice. What is it with that voice? His vocal stylings are haunting, compelling--a broad, choked vibrato that owes something to Howlin' Wolf and something to the diddley-bow, with a gravelly, bourbon-soaked edge. Some of us think he's the best blues singer in Mississippi. Maybe that's because he's lived a remarkable, wide-ranging life that has taken him far beyond the Magnolia State. Perry was born in rural Lafayette County; his father was a cotton sharecropper and moonshiner--"a country hustler," according to his son--and young Bill Perry spent his share of time in the fields. He moved to Chicago as a young man and spent time in the clubs listening to Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Mighty Joe Young, but gospel is where he got his first break. By his late 'teens he'd recorded gospel for Chess Records, toured the country with various groups and, played bass and guitar behind the Five Blind Boys and Shirley Ceaser. In 1966, after a 12-day stint at Harlem's Apollo Theater, he found himself in Memphis, broke. He put on his good clothes, went out to a club, and ended up hooking up with Little Milton, his Chess label-mate. Touring with Milton, he began to sing, and he backed up T. Bone Walker, Freddie King, and other blues stars. His odyssey took him back to Chicago, where he worked at Chess as producer and session player until the label shut down in 1975. Later Perry ended up on the West Coast--backing up Little Richard and Johnnie Taylor, writing and producing two albums for Cash McCall. By the late 70s he was burnt out. He retired from music for eight years. Then, in 1987, he moved back to Mississippi and got back to work. During the 1990s his family band, The Perrys--with daughter Shy on bass and Billy, Jr. on keyboards--played weddings and frat parties and made occasional overseas trips. Over the last decade, Perry has begun to play and record more of his own music, including, for the first time, some solo work in the classic Mississippi-bluesman groove. He moonlights as a DJ on WROX in Clarksdale. He's also started to teach local kids at the Delta Blues Museum as part of the Arts and Education Program. "I'm not your typical bluesman," Perry told an interviewer. "I'm stable and in a stable marriage for many years, so I don't sing about love lost and things. I look around me and see what I see and write about it and sing about it. The sounds that Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Charlie Patton and all that stuff that they was playing, I have tried to take and borrow from that and add in my own special blend of experience over the years." Perry and his band will be backing up Billy Branch, entertaining us in their own right, and giving the rest of us a chance to jam with one of the living masters of Mississippi blues.

NEW ALIVE RECORDS LIVE ALBUM "ALIVE AT THE DEEP BLUES FEST" OUT NOV. 27TH!

ALIVE NATURALSOUND RECORDS TO RELEASE LIVE ALBUM "ALIVE AT THE DEEP BLUES FEST" NOV. 27TH ON CD, DIGITAL & BBQ SAUCE RED COLORED VINYL!

ALBUM INCLUDES LIVE PERFORMANCES FROM ALIVE RECORDING ARTISTS BUFFALO KILLERS, LEE BAINS III & THE GLORY FIRES, RADIO MOSCOW, LEFT LANE CRUISER & MORE!

Earlier this summer Chris Johnson (owner of Bayport BBQ in the Twin Cities' suburb of Bayport, MN) resurrected his popular Deep Blues Festival for three glorious (sold-out) days of great music, Southern-style BBQ and camaraderie between musicians, fans and friends alike. Far from the corporate sterility of many larger modern music fests, Johnson's Deep Blues Fest instead successfully revived the communal spirit of late '60s and early '70s music gatherings, evoking the vibe of a large summer picnic with family, friends, good food and great music.

The 2012 Deep Blues Fest featured 26 bands from four countries & 16 states. Out of these acts there were seven phenomenal performances from the current Alive roster. Alive At The Deep Blues Fest is the document of these incendiary and unforgettable performances. All 13 tracks were mixed by famed Detroit producer/musician Jim Diamond, who managed to capture the loose and spontaneous feel of live albums produced in the Golden Age of rock'n'roll. Buffalo Killers and Radio Moscow turned in super heavy sets soaked in psychedelia and reverb, while Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires fiercely ripped through their show with a blistering set of songs steeped in Southern rock, R&B, soul, gospel and punk from their critically acclaimed debut LP There Is A Bomb In Gilead - an album that has been helping to define the sounds of The New South. Brian Olive and his backing band melded soulful R&B with technicolor garage-pop for their early daytime set, while the Welsh duo Henry's Funeral Shoe, Left Lane Cruiser and newcomers John The Conqueror perhaps kept closest to the Deep Blues curriculum with their respectively raunchy and heavily amplified modern interpretations of rural gutbucket Delta Blues.

To get a sense of this intimate yet electrifying festival, grab a copy of Alive At The Deep Blues Fest, invite a bunch of good friends over for some food & drink, and PLAY IT LOUD.

Alive at the Deep Blues Fest will be released November 27th through Alive Naturalsound Records in the following formats: CD, Digital and Black Vinyl with mp3 download card & poster, as well as Limited Edition "BBQ SAUCE RED" Colored Vinyl exclusive to the Bomp mail-order.

Chris Johnson and Alive Naturalsound Records will be throwing a special Alive At The Deep Blues Fest Record Release Show featuring Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires on Sat. Dec. 1st at 8:00pm at Bayport BBQ, 328 5th Ave. N., Bayport, MN

Things That I Used To Do - Bennie Smith

Bennie Smith (October 5, 1933, St. Louis, Missouri - September 10, 2006, St. Louis, Missouri) was a St. Louis blues guitarist, considered to be one of the city's patriarchs of electric blues. His sound was emblematic of a St. Louis blues music that he helped define in over half a century practicing his trade. His contributions to the genre in that city, from the early 1950s and almost until the day of his death, included mentor, performer, and recording artist. Due to his significant contribution to blues music in St. Louis, in October 2003 he received a proclamation from mayor Francis Slay marking October 5, 2003 as 'Bennie Smith Day' in that city. The board of alderman similarly honored Mr. Smith, recognizing him as the "Dean of St. Louis Electric Guitarists". During the 2006 'Big Muddy Blues Festival' in St. Louis, Mayor Slay honored Bennie once again on September 2 of that year, declaring that day also be known as 'Bennie Smith Day' in St. Louis Smith worked as a session man on many recordings over the years, and has three original albums to his name: The Urban Soul of Bennie Smith (Blues Highway - 1993), Shook Up (Fedora Records - 2001)), and The Bennie Smith All Star Session (2006). In a notable 1958 session, Smith was invited to contribute on what would be Tina Turner's first recording, "Boxtop". The song featured Ike Turner with 'Little Ann' on backing vocals, and Smith on guitar. In addition, he has played with such guitar players as Hubert Sumlin, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, B.B. King and Grant Green. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! I’m looking for great talent and trying to grow the audience for your favorites band! ”LIKE”

Red Hot - Billy Lee Riley

Billy Lee Riley (October 5, 1933 – August 2, 2009) was an American rockabilly musician, singer, record producer and songwriter. His most memorable recordings included "Rock With Me Baby," and "Red Hot" Born in Pocahontas, Arkansas, the son of a sharecropper, Riley learned to play guitar from black farm workers. After 4 years in the Army, Riley first recorded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1955 before being lured to Sun Studios by Sam Phillips. He recorded "Trouble Bound" for Jack Clement and Slim Wallace. Sam Phillips obtained the rights and he released "Trouble Bound" b/w "Rock With Me Baby" on September 1, 1956 (Sun 245). His first hit was "Flyin' Saucers Rock and Roll" b/w "I Want You Baby" released February 23, 1957 (Sun 260) with backing piano by Jerry Lee Lewis, after which he recorded "Red Hot" b/w "Pearly Lee" released September 30, 1957 (Sun 277). "Red Hot" was showing a lot of promise as a big hit record, but Sam Phillips pulled the promotion and switched it to "Great Balls Of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis. Riley felt that his own chances of chart success were compromised by Phillips diverting resources to Lewis' career. He had other Sun recordings and they, likewise, did not have a lot of sales as his promotion had stopped. Like other artists such as Sonny Burgess, Hayden Thompson, Ray Harris and Warren Smith, chart success largely eluded him. Considered good looking and with wild stage moves, Riley had a brief solo career with his backing band "The Little Green Men". Riley and his Little Green Men were the main Sun studio band. They were Riley, Roland Janes, J.M. Van Eaton, Marvin Pepper, and Jimmy Wilson, later joined by Martin Willis. In 1960, he left Sun, and started Rita Record label with Roland Janes. They produced the national hit record "Mountain Of Love" by Harold Dorman. He later started two other labels Nita and Mojo. In 1962, he moved to Los Angeles and worked as a session musician with Dean Martin, the Beach Boys, Herb Alpert, Sammy Davis Jr. and others, as well as recording under various aliases. In the early 1970s, Riley quit music to return to Arkansas to begin his own construction business. In 1978 "Red Hot" and "Flyin' Saucers Rock 'n' Roll" were covered by Robert Gordon and Link Wray, which led to a one-off performance in Memphis in 1979, the success of which led to further recording at Sun Studio and a full-time return to performing. Rediscovered by Bob Dylan in 1992, who had been a fan since 1956, Riley played rock and roll, blues and country-blues. His album Hot Damn! (Capricorn, 1997) was nominated for a Grammy Award. He was injured falling on a slippery department store floor in 2005, requiring two surgeries as a result. In 2006, he released a country CD, Hillbilly Rockin' Man. The Rockabilly Hall of Fame reported in summer 2009 that Riley was in poor health, battling stage four colon cancer. His last public performance came in June 2009 at the New Daisy Theatre on Beale Street in Memphis, when he took part in "Petefest 2009," honoring historian Pete Daniel, who had befriended Riley while helping launch the Memphis Rock N' Soul Museum. Supported by a walker, Billy Lee rocked out on "My Gal" and other of his old hits. He succumbed to colon cancer on August 2, 2009, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Hideaway - Left Hand Frank Craig

Southpaw guitarist Frank Craig (like many of his peers, he played an axe strung for a right-hander, strapping it on upside down) never really transcended his reputation as a trusty sideman instead of a leader -- and that was just fine with him. But he stepped into the spotlight long enough to sing four fine tunes for Alligator's Living Chicago Blues anthologies in 1978. Craig was already conversant with the guitar when he moved to Chicago at age 14. Too young to play inside the Club Zanzibar (where Muddy Waters, Little Walter, and Wolf held forth), Frank and his teenaged pals, guitarist Eddie King and bassist Willie Black, played outside the joint for tips instead. Legit gigs with harpist Willie Cobbs, guitarist James Scott, Jr., Jimmy Dawkins, Junior Wells, Good Rockin' Charles, Jimmy Rogers, and Hound Dog Taylor kept Frank increasingly active on the Chicago circuit from the mid-'50s to the late '70s. He moved to Los Angeles not too long after the Alligator session, eventually hanging up his guitar altogether due to health problems. Juke - Rick Estrin & the Nightcats with Fuad Farah and Jake Friel

Singer, songwriter, and virtuoso blues harpist Rick Estrin was born in San Francisco, California in 1949, and even as a boy he frequented the tough Market Street area, falling under the spell of music by Ray Charles, Jimmy Reed, Nina Simone, Champion Jack Dupree, and others, and when he picked up the harmonica at age 15, he was already immersed in the urban black culture around him. By 18, he was proficient enough on the harp to jam with the likes of Lowell Fulson and Travis Phillips. After a move to Chicago, Estrin worked with Eddie Taylor, Sam Lay, Johnny Young, and Johnny Littlejohn, and even jammed with Muddy Waters. Moving back to the Bay Area, Estrin met guitarist Little Charlie Baty, and they joined forces to form Little Charlie & the Nightcats in 1976, a high-powered electric urban blues band, and the group stayed together for some 30 years, touring and recording, issuing their first album, All the Way Crazy, in 1987 (the band would go on to release some nine albums on Alligator Records). Estrin developed into a brilliant blues harp soloist, and he had become an equally good blues songwriter, drawing comparisons to Willie Dixon and Cab Calloway, and with his flamboyant stage personality, sharp sense of humor, and a singing voice that drew the best from the material, he became the consummate frontman for the band -- to the point that many thought he was Little Charlie. When Baty, the actual Little Charlie, left the band, Estrin, along with the Nightcats' longtime rhythm section of J. Hansen and Lorenzo Farrell, and new guitarist Kid Anderson, keep the gig going under the new name Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, releasing a debut album, Twisted, under that name on Alligator Records in 2012. Thats Why I Cry - Varetta Dillard

Varetta Dillard (3 February 1933 – 4 October 1993) was an American rhythm and blues singer in the 1950s whose biggest hit was "Mercy, Mr. Percy". She was born in Harlem, New York, and spent much of her childhood in hospital due to a congenital bone condition. By her mid-teens her condition had stabilised, though she remained unable to walk without crutches or other assistance. She met Carl Feaster of doo-wop group The Chords, who encouraged her to enter talent contests as a singer, and in 1951 she won two consecutive competitions at the Apollo Theater. She was signed by Savoy Records, and had her first recording session with the company in September 1951. Although her early singles were commercially unsuccessful, she was invited by Alan Freed to perform at what later became recognised as the first major rock and roll concert, the Moondog Coronation Ball held in Cleveland, Ohio on March 21, 1952. Because of concerns over crowd safety, the concert was shut down by the authorities after the first song, by Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams, and in the event Dillard did not perform. However, her next record, "Easy, Easy Baby", reached # 8 on the Billboard R&B chart in July 1952, being especially popular in the South. She then toured with Oran "Hot Lips" Page and The Five Keys, before the record company paired her with singer H-Bomb Ferguson for a series of duets. After further tours with Larry Darnell and Wynonie Harris, she had her biggest hit in mid 1953 with "Mercy, Mr. Percy", which reached # 6 on the R&B chart. The track was recorded on 15 May 1953 with George Kelly (tenor sax), Haywood Henry (baritone sax), Lonnie Johnson (guitar), Lee Anderson (piano), Prince Babbs (bass), and Gene Brooks (drums), and was arranged by Leroy Kirkland. The song was nationally popular and became her theme song, but she had difficulty following it up and took time off to have a daughter with her husband, Ronald Mack. Her next major success, and final chart hit, came in early 1955 when she recorded "Johnny Has Gone", a tribute to singer Johnny Ace who had died as a result of an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot. Dillard's recording was one of the most popular of several tributes to Ace and reached # 6 on the R&B chart. She continued to tour, and starred in the first rock and roll show in New Jersey in May 1955. She left the Savoy label in early 1956 and signed for the RCA subsidiary label Groove, where she issued several singles including a tribute to James Dean, "I Miss You Jimmy". In 1957, she moved to the main RCA label, and recorded tracks backed by The Cookies and produced by Lieber and Stoller, but they were again unsuccessful commercially and she was dropped by the label in early 1958. She went on to record for the Triumph label set up by Herb Abramson, and then for the Club label, a subsidiary of MGM. Her last recordings were in 1961. In the early 1960s, she joined her husband's gospel group, the Tri-Odds, who were active in the Civil Rights movement. She later worked as a music therapist, with chronically ill children. Two compilations of her recordings from the late 1950s, Got You On My Mind and The Lovin' Bird, were issued by Bear Family Records in 1989. She died of cancer in 1993, at the age of 60, in Brooklyn, New York If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Your Cousin's on COPS - Rev. Peyton and His Big Damn Band

Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills comes Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band playing a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone – Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire – best know, this trio is a force to be reckoned with. The growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for his country home and family and an uncanny ability to breathe new life into old forms of music give them a pedigree many Americana acts would kill for and an ironclad work ethic keeps them on the road 250 dates a year, playing for the people with hurricane force. Locked in with an audience, the band create their own community and welcome the crowd into it, transporting them away from their troubles to joyous release, the way great musicians have done for centuries. The Rev. J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz” Persinger are a living breathing embodiment of the traditions and hard work ethic native to their Brown County, Indiana home. Their new album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle. If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Left at Lula - The Shannon Boshears Band

Hailing from Little Rock, Arkansas, Shannon Boshears has been a musical favorite on the scene where the blues was born and raised, in the south. Her distinctive and gutsy vocal ability is a showcase of her love for various soul, blues, and rock styles on which she accompanies herself on guitar. Depending on the venue, you can find her playing from small, intimate bars to large music festivals like the Arkansas River Blues Festival and The King Biscuit Blues Festival. Boshears has carved out her own musical groove that can be seen and heard on any given night on which she is performing. In 2001, she released her first full length CD, “Chicksinger.” She showcased twelve original tracks that featured blues/rock, guitar driven songs with as much diversity as her musical tastes. From that CD, the track “If Anybody Asks You (Callin’)” was picked up on the soundtrack to the Ashley Judd film, “Come Early Morning” which was released nationwide in theaters and released on a soundtrack alongside giants such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and Billy Joe Shaver. Boshears released her second CD, “Black Mascara” in 2008. Another diverse release, she delivers 11 tracks showing her southern roots of blues, rock, country and gospel. “I’m very inspired by the south and all the area that surrounds me here. I tend to draw on it a lot for my writing,” she explains. “Growing up in Arkansas, the landscape was washed with blues, country, rock and gospel music. It’s all of these genres are found in the songs that come out of me.” She explains, “All of that music is the same to me, really. It’s such a fine line – even though they may sound different, they each produce the same effect. I get the same feeling from blues music that I do from gospel – it’s a yearning for something else, something that no person or thing can satisfy in me.” If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! Diggin': "Lee Gates"
Lee GatesIt's fascinating to me how often the generational divide is brought up when debating matters of taste. Especially given the shifting nature of the musical landscape and the rapidly widening technological divide, which simultaneously complicates and facilitates discovery -- of new artists, of new genres, of forgotten history. As a fairly young person who's consistently been into "older" forms of music, I was naturally drawn to Lee Gates' "Why Don't These Young People Understand?" because it promised to speak to that fascination via good old delta blues.

Trying to explain the Blues to people is like trying to explain breathing; it's something that just happens to you. Gates' track is a great illustration of all the descriptors I regularly use: "dirty" (the slide of his fingers on the guitar), "organic" (you could easily imagine that, if it weren't a recording, he could easily take this in many different directions depending on his general mood at the time of playing it), "soulful" and a little bit melancholy. It's really about isolation, and seeking some way to bridge that gap. Hopefully, the wailing voice of his guitar will do its part the help everybody understand.
Make sure you're following us on Facebook and Twitter - we'll be exploring Mississippi Blues through artists like Lee Gates during October as part of our Know Your Roots campaign!
